Reflections from the Intersection of Slow Recovery and No Control

Rev. Karen Brammer

Rebuilding capacity after heart surgery, I find two phrases seem the most reliably helpful in the midst of painful surprises and setbacks (that is, after “Owe!” or “Oh NO!”). I’m getting better at mustering the first constructive thought: “Breathe. Now breathe deeper, even if it hurts.” The second, “Isn’t that interesting? ” This second comes under the category of “Say it and hopefully I’ll come to believe it.”  This seems another exercise in Unitarian Universalist faith formation!
